Most lawns in Southeast Michigan are cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue and perennial ryegrass. They grow fastest in spring and fall, slow down in summer heat, and hold up best when they are not cut too short.

Good maintenance is mostly rhythm. Cut often enough that you never remove more than about a third of the blade at once, keep the mower height up, and keep the edges clean. That is the difference between a lawn that looks cared for and one that is always catching up.

Timing

When lawn care starts and stops in Michigan

In our area the mowing season usually runs from mid-April or May, once the grass is actively growing, to late October or November, when growth stops. The exact dates move with the weather, so the schedule follows the lawn rather than the calendar.

Questions about lawn mowing

How often should a lawn be mowed in Michigan?

About once a week during spring and fall growth is typical. In the heat of midsummer, cool-season grass slows down and can go longer between cuts.

How short should the grass be cut?

Cool-season lawns generally do best kept at around 3 inches or taller. Cutting shorter stresses the grass and lets weeds in.

Can I add a one-time job, like a cleanup, to my regular mowing?

Yes. Tell us when you send your request. Cleanups, mulch and planting are common add-ons, and each has its own page on this site.
