Redwood Property Maintenance mows, trims, mulches and landscapes yards in Livonia, Michigan, one of the larger suburbs near our Garden City base. Livonia is a Tree City USA with firm grass and leaf rules, and its mostly owner-occupied lots suit regular maintenance.
Livonia covers about 36 square miles and is the most owner-occupied of the seven towns we serve, at about 87 percent, with roughly 86 percent single-family houses. The median home dates to 1964, with a lot of building in both the 1950s and the 1960s. These are established neighborhoods.
It is also a city that cares about its trees. Livonia has been a Tree City USA since 1998, and it was on Michigan's 2025 list of awardees. For a homeowner there, hedge and bush trimming, clean seasonal cleanups and well-kept beds fit naturally.
Livonia's grass, leaf and yard waste rules
Livonia's weed notice says owners must keep grass, weeds and brush under 9 inches, with enforcement beginning May 1. If the owner does not cut it, the city may do so and bill for it, including the strip next to the property. A city flyer also asks that clippings not be blown into the street or onto a neighbor's property, and that landscaping not block the view of drivers and pedestrians.
Leaves have their own system. City crews pick up leaves raked into a long windrow in the street, leaves only, kept out of gutters, and in 2025 the program ran from late October into early December. Yard waste in bundles, bags or cans is collected from the end of March through the second week of December, and branches have their own length, weight and bundle limits. Plastic bags are not picked up, so we work with paper bags or marked cans. The city's soils are mostly sandy loam and loamy sand, about half rated somewhat poorly drained.
Spring comes with the May 1 grass rule, so the first mow and the spring cleanup are usually done by then. Summer is mowing, trimming and watching the beds. In fall, the city's leaf windrow program and the oak-wilt pruning window both matter: oaks are not pruned from mid-April through mid-July, and fall into winter is the time to schedule tree work. A good cleanup in November leaves the lawn ready for winter.
