Garden City is where we work from. Census figures put the median home here at 1956, and about nine in ten homes are single-family houses. The original home sites were laid out as one-acre plots, and most are now much smaller, some as small as 40 by 135 feet. A yard that size does not need much equipment, but it does need to be kept up, because a front lawn shows every missed week.

Most Garden City yards share the same handful of jobs: a lawn to mow and edge, a flower bed along the house, a few shrubs that grow into the walk, and trees that drop a lot of leaves in fall. That is where our lawn mowing, seasonal cleanups and mulch work fits.

What Garden City expects from a yard

The city's own FAQ says you can be ticketed if grass grows over 12 inches, and that debris left in a yard can be cited after a 10-day notice. Yard waste has its own rules too: it goes out in Kraft paper bags or a container of up to 32 gallons marked for yard waste, kept apart from regular trash. For 2026 the hauler lists the yard waste season as April 6 to December 11, weekly on your normal trash day. Check the city page for the current schedule.

Under the lawn, the USDA soil survey shows mostly sandy loam or loamy sand at the surface with clay deeper down, and many spots are rated somewhat poorly or poorly drained. Water can sit on the clay below the sandy top layer, and much of the ground has been built over or disturbed. That is the case for aerating a tired lawn in early fall.

The city's Tree Program has planted trees at no cost to the owner in approved right-of-way strips, with the owner then watering, weeding and mulching the tree. Check the city page for whether applications are open. A ring of mulch around a young tree, kept off the trunk, is a small job that helps it along.

A Garden City year

Spring starts with a cleanup once the ground has dried, usually April, which lines up with the first week of yard waste collection. Summer is mowing and edging, with a short list of beds that need weeding and a hedge or two that has outgrown the walk. Late August and September suit aeration and overseeding, and fall closes with the leaf cleanup, timed after most of the trees have dropped and before the yard waste season ends in December.
