In and around Garden City the soil is mostly a sandy loam over clay, and much of it drains slowly. Add construction, foot traffic and mowers, and the ground packs down. Compacted soil sheds water instead of absorbing it, grass roots stay shallow and the lawn thins out.

Core aeration punches small holes and pulls out plugs of soil. The plugs break down on the surface and the holes give roots room to grow deeper. It is not a fix for every lawn problem, but for a tired, compacted lawn it is one of the most useful things you can do.

What is included

  • Core aeration across the lawn
  • Overseeding thin or damaged areas
  • Plugs left on the surface to break down
  • Timing the job to when cool-season grass is actively growing

Timing

The best time to aerate in Michigan

Fall is the best time, because the grass is not stressed and has good conditions to recover, which makes late summer to early fall the window. Spring can work if the lawn is actively growing. Avoid aerating in the heat of midsummer. Underground sprinkler heads and pet-fence wire should be marked first.

Questions about aeration & overseeding

How do I know if my lawn needs aerating?

Water that runs off or puddles, thin spots, and soil too hard to push a screwdriver into are all signs. Lawns that see a lot of foot traffic compact faster.

Will aeration leave my lawn looking worse?

For a week or two there are small soil plugs on the surface. They break down with rain and mowing, and the lawn fills in thicker afterwards.

Should I overseed after aerating?

It is a good moment to. The holes give seed good contact with soil. Tell us you want it when you send your request.
