Redwood Property Maintenance mows, trims, mulches and landscapes yards in Canton Township, Michigan, one of the seven towns we serve. Canton is a township rather than a city, covers about 36 square miles, and has a township code that keeps lawn grass under 5 inches and shrubs off the sidewalk.
Canton is a township, not a city, and at about 36 square miles of land it is a large one. Census figures put the median home at 1991. About half of its homes were built in 1990 or later, and the biggest single decade is the 1970s, at about three in ten. Roughly 65 percent of homes are single-family houses and about 77 percent are owner-occupied.
Canton borders Westland, which borders our Garden City base. With homes built across such a wide spread of years, the regular jobs are the ones every yard has: a lawn to mow and edge, shrubs to keep off the walk, and beds to keep mulched. That is where our lawn mowing, hedge and bush trimming and mulch work fits.
Canton's grass, sidewalk and yard waste rules
The township code says lawn grass may not exceed five inches and prohibits noxious weeds of any length, and the property maintenance section repeats the five-inch limit for landscaped grass areas. If an owner does not comply after ten days' notice, the township may cut the grass and bill the owner. The same property maintenance section says trees and shrubs must be kept trimmed so they do not encroach on a public sidewalk or pathway, with at least seven feet of clear headroom. The Ordinance Enforcement Unit lists grass height and trees and shrubs on sidewalks among the things it enforces. Check the township code for the current wording.
Canton's page says curbside yard waste pickup runs from the first full week in April through the third week in December, and containers must be labeled. Grass, leaves and garden waste go in 30-gallon paper yard waste bags (not grocery bags) or marked reusable containers up to 32 gallons, and plastic bags and anything over 50 pounds are not accepted. Branches are tied with twine in bundles up to three feet long and 1.5 inches thick, at most six bundles a week. Mulch, sod and dirt are not accepted as yard waste. For a cleanup, that decides how the job is bagged and hauled.
In the USDA soil survey, most of Canton's mapped ground is loam, silt loam or sandy loam, and about nine in ten of the sampled points are rated somewhat poorly drained or wetter. That is the case for aerating a lawn in early fall. In March 2026 the state's DNR also named Canton Township as one of five new Tree City USA communities, for work done in 2025.
Canton's yard waste collection opens in early April and runs to the third week of December, so the spring cleanup, summer mowing and the fall leaf cleanup all fit inside it. Summer work is mowing and trimming to stay under the five-inch grass limit and keep shrubs back from the sidewalk, with aeration and overseeding in late August to September. In winter, Canton's code gives 72 hours to clear sidewalk snow, and the township declares a snow emergency, with parking banned on all streets, when about five inches or more is predicted.
