Northville is a city and a township. The City of Northville covers about two square miles, in Wayne County and Oakland County, and borders Northville Township and Novi. Census figures put the city's median home at 1968, about two in three homes are single-family houses, and about 80 percent are owner-occupied. About 23 percent of its homes were built in 1939 or earlier.

Northville Township is a separate government of about 16 square miles. Its median home was built in 1993, about 60 percent of its homes are single-family houses and about 78 percent are owner-occupied, and it borders Livonia, one of the other towns we serve. For yards in either, the regular jobs are lawn mowing, hedge and bush trimming and seasonal cleanups.

Northville's grass, leaf and brush rules

In the City of Northville, the property maintenance code says exterior property must be kept free of weeds or plant growth over six inches, where 'weeds' means grasses, annual plants and vegetation other than trees, shrubs, cultivated flowers and gardens. Sidewalk snow and ice must be cleared within 24 hours, and snow cleared from driveways and lots may not be pushed into or across a street in a way that impedes traffic. Check the city's current code wording.

Leaves have a program of their own. Each fall the city collects leaves that residents rake into the street along the curb, and its page says this is the only time of year material may go in the street. The ordinance says to rake the weekend before your scheduled collection, leaves only, with no grass, twigs or branches. The city's schedule says the program starts in late October and finishes in early December, and the 2026 schedule is marked tentative. Branches have a year-round program: up to six feet long and six inches thick, stacked neatly between the street and the sidewalk.

Compost is collected weekly in season by Priority Waste, in Kraft paper bags or labeled containers, with filled bags no heavier than 50 pounds. The city's page gives the season as April 1 to November 30, while the hauler lists April 6 to December 11, so check both before setting out the last bags. In the soil survey, much of the city's ground is loamy sand or loam and more than half of the sampled points are well or excessively drained, but roughly four in ten sit on map units with slopes of 6 percent or more, and some low ground along streams is mapped as frequently flooded. Slope is a reason to plan bed edges and mulch with care. The state's DNR listed the City of Northville among its 2025 Tree City USA communities.

Northville Township's code sets its weed limit higher, at ten inches, for developed property and for undeveloped land within 150 feet of it (amended August 2022).

A Northville year

The spring cleanup comes as compost collection opens in early April, and summer is mowing and trimming under the city's six-inch limit, with aeration and overseeding in late August to September. The fall leaf program is the main event: leaves are raked into a long windrow along the curb in your scheduled week, with no grass or twigs, and kept clear of mailboxes, street signs and tight corners. The city asks that nothing be put in the street after the final scheduled week, because the equipment is converted for snow.
